Time is right to alter Manchester United's formation - Ruben Amorim declares.

Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was among seven senior stars to miss the holiday period triumph against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim argues that altering Man Utd's tactical system due to media noise would have been "the finish" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle, Amorim ditched his usual back three setup with wing-backs and opted to field an traditional four-man defense with two holding midfielders.

By his own admission this ultimately transformed into a six-man defensive block in the closing stages as his squad held on for a crucial result - securing just their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

Although he once memorably said that not even the Pope could compel him to adjust his approach, Amorim insists the option to experiment with varied formations has consistently been part of his plan.

Yet, he stresses he could only implement the change when his team were performing at an acceptable level - or else it would seem as if he was giving in to external pressure.

"At the time I came here last season, I realized perhaps I don't have the players to perform effectively in that formation, but it was the start of a process," he stated.

"Our aim was to establish an philosophy. Currently is a distinct juncture. We lack a lot of personnel, and we must adjust, so they see the reason we are switching things up.

"It is not because of the influence of the media, or the fans.

"Whenever you talk about changing the formation all the time, I can't make a change because the players will believe I'm changing because of external voices and I think that is a disaster for the coach.

"When we are performing strongly in our preferred setup, then is the moment to evolve.

"This will help us develop into a better side because when our full complement of personnel return, we are not planning to use a back three in every match."

Availability Challenges Persist

With only two victories in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is correct to state his side have been playing well.

He is, nonetheless, managing with a severely stretched roster, with multiple first-team players already confirmed absent for the upcoming fixture against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That figure will increase if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to shake off the knock that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will be absent for the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is understood to be pressing his boss to let him to make a comeback following his muscle problem.

"Bruno is already saying he needs to train," revealed Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No chance. You can quote me on that."

Fernandes' Influence Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the Portuguese star will almost certainly still be a prominent presence, as whereas most injured players view matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed monitoring the pre-match routines from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to carry on providing insight.

"The guy is a natural leader," he stated. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's not talking and offering advice. He's constantly communicating. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"There are negative aspects at times - the way he moves his arms - but he has a lot of strengths. After he recovers, he goes to observe the other guys training. There are a lot of things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my job or not, but he's a leader. He is a leader."

Return Schedule for Key Personnel

While the exact date for Fernandes' return - and that of other unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unknown, by the end of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
