Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
